Shut Eyes is an idea born from a realization that life in America and other prosperous nations can be so selfish and comfortable that it becomes very easy to miss or dismiss what's really happening in the world near and far. A world where over 884 million people 1 still use unsafe drinking water sources. Over 1 billion people—1 in 6 people around the world—live in extreme poverty, defined as living on less than $1 a day. 2 In Darfur The United Nations puts the death toll at roughly 300,000, while the former U.N. undersecretary-general puts the number at no less than 400,000. Up to 2.5 million Darfuris have fled their homes and continue to live in camps throughout Darfur, or in refugee camps in neighboring Chad and the Central African Republic. 3

All of these issues are so important and need serious attention. But in the arena of social awareness they are for lack of a better term, popular. They are issues that are known at least by some. Shut Eyes is about these issues but it is also about the thousands of other issues that go unnoticed around us every day. This is a forum where you can post issues you see in front of your face, read on the internet, or discuss around the kitchen table. This site should act as a push to get out and see and touch the things that are reality for so many people. Make first steps to deal with these problems and record them. One step at a time we can make a difference.

Poverty, oppression and injustice should always be on our mind. We are all connected by one creator. Created by Him equally. The causes of the weak are always on His mind even when we forget. Ps. 140:12; I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and justice for the poor.
